Back to Basics

Renew the pioneer spirit and experience a simpler lifestyle. Classes meet from 9:00 to noon for a $20 fee. For adults and teens. Reservations are required, and these classes fill up quickly!

March 6: Learn to MAKE A BRAIDED RUG with Ann McConnell. The cost goes down if you bring 3 or 4 pairs of jeans.

March 13: Make Your Own Herbal Medicines with Mary Alice Hardin. Make and take home a salve, a liniment, and an extract. Experiment with medicinal teas.

April 10: Beginning Basket Weaving with Susan Byerly.


Growing and Gathering Herbs

Let’s go through the growing season together learning to gather herbs that are being cultivated and ones that are growing wild. After they are picked, then what do you do with them? Mary Alice will cover uses of different plants and techniques for preserving them. Class will happen rain or shine. Each class will be different. $10 fee per class. Reservations are required.

Wilderness Sustainability

Go into the woods with confidence! Join Steve Seymour and Dean Davis for a series of three classes. Each class meets from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a break for lunch. BYO lunch and water bottle. For adults and teens. These three Saturday programs are hands-on! $30 fee per single class and $75 for all three. A survival kit created by Steve will be given to each student. Reservations are required.

April 17 – Food and Water Procurement. Traps, snares, edible and medicinal plants, purify creek water, solar still, make fishing gear from items in the woods, make a minnow trap from a 2-litre plastic bottle.

May 15 – Primitive Fire and Shelter. Debris hut, fire making using items in the woods, reflecting a fire.

June 19 – Wayfinding and Health & Safety. Navigate through the wilderness, even if you think you are lost. Wilderness first aid, such as snakebites and bee stings. Ways to prevent illness and accident while hiking and camping. E-mail Mary Alice and ask for a special brochure with more information about the Wilderness Sustainability series.


Listening to the Silence Retreat

Here is your opportunity to get away from your regular routine and spend time in the woods in solitude and silence. Give yourself time to relax in nature and get to know yourself better. If you cannot attend the full program, you can make arrangements to attend a portion of the event. For adults and mature teens. Facilitators for this event are Mary Alice Hardin and Peggy Frost. $99 fee. Reservations and a $10 non-refundable registration fee by May 15 are required. Family Fun in the Sun!

July 17 from 1:00 to 4:00. Let’s get outside to enjoy summer! Games, stories, crafts, hike, creek walk. The event will occur even if we have to be indoors and pretend about sunshine. Fee: $10 per parent/child pair; maximum of $20 per family. Reservations are required.


Time for Tea

August 7 from 2:00 to 5:00 How did the different types of tea get their names? What is the difference between regular tea and herb tea? What are the nutritional benefits of tea? How do you make the perfect pot of tea? If you are wondering these things and if you have other questions about tea, then this class is for you. The time is chosen in accord with the traditional time for afternoon tea, since we will be doing some tasting! For adults and teens. $10 fee. Reservations are required.
